We are making many changes over the next little while and with that one significant change will be the name of our beloved Sweet Grass.

The scent has always been a prairies scent, inspired by the landscape I was born and have grown up in. When the scent was named I was actually unaware of Sweet Grass the plant and traditional medicine. The name was meant to be descriptive of the landscape broadly and the formula doesn’t use Sweet Grass (Hierochloe odorata) but clearly the name indicates not only the landscape but the plant Sweet Grass (Hierochloe odorata)

It was pointed out last year that despite not using the plant in the formula, the name indicating a sacred medicine may be causing harm, perhaps giving the sense of permission for coopting and taking ownership over a story and piece of a culture that isn’t mine.

After conversations with people who's opinion I respect I have decided to change the name. Between the option of business and name recognition and causing harm or hurt the answer is an easy one. I intend to tell the stories that are my own.

So welcome the new name, Grasslands.

I love this name as it alludes to the broad and reaching landscape I had intended to evoke with the name Sweet Grass. Grasslands feels to me like a vast landscape of shared memories, dusty sunsets and low, rolling clouds.

The scent will not change at all, same beloved scent, new name. The name will switch over in early 2025 when we change our brand name.
